How to Design your Bed

With British Beds Worldwide, your bed can not only enable you to sleep better than you have ever slept before but, it can also be as individual as you are.

Every bed that we supply is hand-made in the UK with the finest natural and sustainable fillings which means that, whichever product you choose, you can be assured of its quality and craftsmanship as well as its sleep-inducing effects.

We can help you choose:

  • the right mattress for you in terms of support, comfort and size;
  • the right base for you in terms of materials, support, storage and design;
  • the perfect headboard to crown your bed and complement your bedroom in terms of style, colour and materials; and
  • your personalised bedding and accessories to enhance your sleep experience.

Where to begin. Be inspired. Browse our products.  Look through magazines.  Dream.  Imagine.  And then talk to us because we can turn dreams and imagination into reality!

Take a look through our website, follow the links to browse through wonderful fabric collections, read about what each part of a bed does, and consider what you want from your bed. Ask us for advice: we have years and years of experience in helping customers to create the bed that is just right for them, even though they never get to try it first.  (This is what we do, and no-one does it better).

Choose your mattress: for example, pocket-sprung, usually without latex but with it if you like it, one-piece, zipped, combination, with or without a mattress topper.

Consider the level of support that you require from your mattress. Our years of experience have shown that most often soft-tension springs are most suitable for people weighing up to 75kg, medium-tension springs for people weighing between 75kg and 100kg, and firm-tension springs for people weighing between 100kg and 115kg.  If you’re heavier than 115kg, or if you and your partner are of different weights or have different preferences, don’t despair – we can still help you.

Consider the level of comfort that you require from your mattress. Do you want to be enveloped by your mattress, lie on top of it, or snuggle somewhere in between? Would you like to add a removable mattress topper not only to provide an additional comfort layer but also to protect and keep it hygienic and so extend its useful life?

Consider the size of your mattress. Size does matter, because partner movement is the most common cause of disturbed sleep.  We advocate that you buy the widest bed that you can afford and fit into your bedroom. Just remember to consider access to your bedroom and that our highest-quality mattresses, which need to be turned over, are very, very heavy.  In the past, customers have had to remove doors, windows and bannisters to get their bed into their bedroom, but it has always been worth it!  And they invite friends to supper on pain of helping to turn the mattress!

If you would like a big bed but access to your room is restricted or difficult, you could choose a zipped mattress.  This kind of mattress is made in two long halves that may be zipped together.  And you may have your base split into two or even four pieces that all link perfectly together.  Even your headboard can be made in two halves!

Choose your base: for example, shallow or deep padded top divan, hand side-stitched pocketed, hand-lashed, pocket-sprung sprung-edge or firm-edge, or open coil sprung; or a wooden or fabric upholstered slatted bedstead.

Consider the level of support that you want your base to provide for your mattress. A padded-top or platform- top divan-base will give your mattress a noticeably firmer feel; a hand side-stitched pocketed divan will give your mattress a slightly firmer feel; a hand-lashed divan or a slatted base will give your mattress a just perceptible firmer feel; a pocketed divan will usually make your mattress feel as the manufacturer intends; and a sprung-edge open coil divan-base will probably make your mattress feel softer than intended.

Consider whether you would like your base to provide storage for your blankets and bedding. If you do require storage, a shallow divan is not the base for you.  Instead you should consider an ottoman base or a deep divan base with drawers (but make sure you have space to open them).

Consider the ‘look’ that you would like to achieve. Would you like a traditional bed with a deep divan base, a tiered bed with lots of lovely layers, a contemporary look with either a shallow divan which looks as if it’s floating, or a bedstead, or something else made lovingly from wood? Would you like your bed upholstered in a plush velvet, woollen weave, linen, leather or vinyl and would you like it finished with traditional chrome castors, elegant wooden feet or hidden “glides”.

Choose a headboard design to crown your bed: for example EuroSlim, EuroWide, Strutted, Wall-Fixing, Statement Height, Extra Height

Would you like a headboard the same width as your bed or wider than the width of your bed, a tall statement headboard or a shallow headboard? Would you like a headboard that fixes to the wall or a headboard that simply rises from the top of your mattress?

Would you like an upholstered headboard or a beautifully hand carved headboard?

Would you like buttons, piping or crystals, shaped shoulders, tiled panels or a contrasting fabric?

If you are unable to find the headboard that you want from the numerous styles we show on our website, we can create it.
